I always knew I wasn’t destined for a desk.
From a young age I was just happier working outside. I loved the practical challenges of construction, and the satisfaction of seeing a tangible result at the end of a day’s labour.
After studying horticulture, I knew the direction I wanted to go. So in 2006 I bought myself a van and started Bricks & Roses.
For a while it was just me and that van. Then it was me and a man and a van. And things continued to grow from there. Quality was always the heartbeat of this work for me, so while our team has expanded to be able to tackle large-scale projects, I’ve always tried to find the balance that allows me to maintain the attention to detail and personal service of a smaller company. Big enough to manage, small enough to care – that’s where I like to be.
I choose my teammates carefully, and it shows. I often have clients tell me our team are the most delightful tradesmen they’ve ever worked with. I can’t express the pride I feel at those words, and in the craftmanship we produce every day.
I still get that same satisfaction that I did as a lad when we finish up a project. It’s an incredible moment… standing in the spot where someone once described their garden dream to me, and seeing that dream has become reality.
Even after all these years, I can’t wait to hear the next one.
